Does any of this sound like YOU?

  • You rely on glasses or contact lenses for clear vision and wish to reduce or eliminate your dependence on them?

  • You've been told that you have a thin cornea and other laser eye surgery procedures like LASIK are not an option?

  • You've been told that you have corneal irregularities, such as corneal scars or keratoconus?

  • You suffer from dry eye symptoms and have heard that it's a better option than LASIK?

  • You're involved in contact sports and want to reduce the risk of flap-related issues?

Mr Marwan Ghabra

Clinical Director

It is important to note that these signs are not definitive indicators of the need for laser eye surgery. After a thorough eye examination and the appropriate diagnostic tests, a qualified eye care professional at The Harley Street Eye Centre can determine a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, if required.

Is Your Cornea Too Thin for LASIK?

While the majority of patients are eligible for LASIK, for some patients it is more clinically appropriate to take the “no flap, no touch” technique of Trans PRK surgery.

With PRK there is no incision and the laser will remove the epithelium layer of the cornea and then apply vision correction. This reduces the risk of raising the fluid pressure within the eye. and reduces the risk of developing dry eye. Another advantage is there is less risk of developing any flap complications. This type of laser eye surgery can be performed on patients who are ineligible for LASIK due to thin corneas.

Trans EPI-PRK Eye Surgery Benefits

Laser eye surgery has come a long way since its introduction, laser eye surgery now extends beyond the correction of short and long sightedness but can also now be used to correct the inevitable loss of focus for near objects as we grow older, necessitating the need for reading glasses.

Trans EPI-PRK allows us to not just improve your vision now but to also mitigate against complications in the short and long term, such as manifesting dry eye symptoms.

Our approach to corrective laser eye surgery differs from that of some high street eye laser clinics.

Our doctors are involved from the start to examine you for eligibility, and to determine if any other conditions such as dry eye needs to be addressed prior to laser eye surgery in line with the best laser eye surgery practices. With this approach, the day of your surgery is well planned, with no unexpected hiccups.

As part of your aftercare you will be able to reach a doctor within 15-30 minutes of contacting us Monday to Saturday.

What Is No-touch-Trans-PRK

Eye Treatment?

As technology advances, more procedures are being offered to patients which were not available before. Laser eye surgery is no exception. The introduction of Trans-Epi PRK or otherwise known as the non-touch technique is an upgrade to conventional laser eye surgery.

This requires the surgical creation of a flap to allow us enough of a window into the cornea to apply the laser. This is important for several reasons, firstly, the doctor touches your eye less.Secondly, there is reduced risk of developing dry eye symptoms. Finally a reduced risk of developing nighttime visual disturbances as is the case with conventional laser surgery.

While these risks are managed and mitigated, the non-touch technique gives longer-term peace of mind.

Here are key points about the no-touch Trans-PRK eye treatment:

  • Non-touch Technique: Unlike conventional laser eye surgery, no-touch Trans-PRK does not involve the creation of a surgical flap on the cornea. Instead, the laser is directly applied to the surface of the cornea, eliminating the need for any physical contact with the eye during the procedure.

  • Reduced Risk: One of the significant advantages of no-touch Trans-PRK is a reduced risk of complications compared to procedures that involve creating a corneal flap. The absence of a flap minimizes the risk of flap-related issues, such as displacement or flap-related infections.

  • Lower Risk of Dry Eye: Traditional laser eye surgery can sometimes cause temporary dry eye symptoms due to the disruption of corneal nerves during flap creation. With no-touch Trans-PRK, there is a lower risk of developing dry eye symptoms, as there is no disruption to the corneal nerves.

  • Nighttime Visual Disturbances: Some patients who undergo conventional laser surgery may experience nighttime visual disturbances, such as halos or glare. No-touch Trans-PRK has been associated with a reduced risk of these disturbances, providing improved visual outcomes, especially in low-light conditions.

  • Long-term Peace of Mind: By choosing the no-touch Trans-PRK technique, patients can have increased confidence and peace of mind regarding the long-term safety and stability of their vision correction. The reduced risks associated with this approach contribute to a greater sense of reassurance.

Trans-PRK Surgery Can Be Used For...

Trans-PRK surgery can be used to correct myopia (short sightedness), astigmatism, presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) and hyperopia (long sightedness). The procedure takes a significantly shorter amount of time to perform and will allow the patient to participate in contact sports.

Some patients may experience a longer down time from this procedure when compared to LASIK, and this is to allow the epithelial layer to regrow. Additionally, some patients may experience some itching or mild discomfort during the healing process.

Advantages of Trans PRK Surgery:

  • Correction of Multiple Refractive Errors: Trans PRK surgery is a versatile procedure that can effectively address various refractive errors, including myopia (short-sightedness), astigmatism, presbyopia (the need for reading glasses), and hyperopia (long-sightedness). Regardless of the specific refractive error you have, Trans PRK surgery offers a comprehensive solution to correct and enhance your vision.

  • Shorter Procedure Time: Compared to other laser eye surgery techniques like LASIK, Trans PRK surgery requires a significantly shorter amount of time to perform. The procedure itself is swift and efficient, minimizing the time spent in the operating room. This not only ensures your comfort but also allows you to resume your daily activities sooner.

  • Participation in Contact Sports: One remarkable advantage of Trans PRK surgery is that it enables patients to participate in contact sports without concerns about corneal flap-related complications. As this procedure does not involve the creation of a corneal flap, there is no risk of flap dislocation or other issues during physical activities. Whether you enjoy playing basketball, soccer, or any other contact sport, Trans PRK surgery provides the freedom to engage in such activities without compromising your visual health.

  • Personalized Treatment Approach: Each patient is unique, and Trans PRK surgery takes this into account. The procedure is tailored to meet your specific needs, providing a customized treatment approach. Your eye surgeon will carefully evaluate your eye health and determine the optimal parameters for the laser ablation, ensuring the best possible outcome in terms of visual correction and clarity.

  • Excellent Visual Outcomes: Trans PRK surgery delivers remarkable visual outcomes for patients. By precisely reshaping the cornea using advanced laser technology, this procedure can significantly improve your visual acuity. Many individuals experience a significant reduction or even elimination of their dependence on glasses or contact lenses after Trans PRK surgery, allowing them to enjoy a more active and convenient lifestyle

Overall, Trans PRK surgery is a highly effective and versatile procedure that can correct various refractive errors and enhance your visual acuity. With its shorter procedure time, the ability to participate in contact sports, and the potential for excellent visual outcomes, Trans PRK surgery offers a reliable and appealing solution for individuals seeking vision correction.

Aftercare and Recovery After Trans-PRK Surgery

The recovery process following Trans-PRK surgery is an important phase that ensures optimal healing and visual acuity. The epithelium that is removed at the first stage of the laser procedure starts to regrow over the first few days, and vision can be blurred during this time and will gradually improve with epithelium regrowth.

During the first 24 to 72 hours you may experience mild pain and sensitivity to light, and we provide you with drops to aid you in your recovery at this stage.

Here are some key points regarding aftercare and recovery:

  • Epithelial Regrowth: During Trans-PRK surgery, the thin outer layer of the cornea called the epithelium is gently removed to allow for laser reshaping of the underlying corneal tissue. Following the procedure, the epithelium starts to regrow naturally over the first few days. It is important to note that during this initial phase of regrowth, your vision may be temporarily blurred. However, as the epithelium regenerates, your vision will gradually improve, leading to clearer and sharper eyesight.

  • Discomfort and Light Sensitivity: It is common to experience mild pain and sensitivity to light during the first 24 to 72 hours after Trans-PRK surgery. This discomfort is typically managed through the use of prescribed eye drops, which help alleviate any pain and reduce inflammation. It is important to follow the post-operative instructions provided by your eye surgeon and use the prescribed drops as directed to ensure a smooth recovery process.

  • Protecting Your Eyes: After Trans-PRK surgery, it is crucial to take measures to protect your eyes during the healing period. This includes wearing protective sunglasses or eyewear when exposed to bright sunlight or harsh lighting conditions. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent any potential complications or disruption of the healing process.

  • Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments with your eye surgeon are an essential part of the aftercare process. These appointments allow your surgeon to monitor your progress, assess the healing of your eyes, and address any concerns or questions you may have. Your surgeon will provide you with a specific schedule for these follow-up visits, ensuring that your recovery is progressing as expected.

  • Patience and Time: It is important to remember that each individual's healing process varies, and it may take some time for your vision to stabilize completely after Trans-PRK surgery. Be patient and allow your eyes to heal naturally. It is common to experience fluctuations in vision and occasional dryness during the initial weeks or months. However, these issues typically resolve over time as your eyes adapt and adjust to the changes made during the surgery.

The aftercare and recovery phase following Trans-PRK surgery is crucial for achieving the best possible visual outcomes. By following the post-operative instructions provided by your eye surgeon, using the prescribed eye drops, and attending regular follow-up appointments, you can support a smooth and successful recovery.

Why Choose PRK Over Other Laser Eye Correction Options?

While LASIK and PRK both apply a laser to the middle layers of the cornea to bring about vision correction, the way in which the laser accesses this part of the cornea differs.

Here's a closer look at LASIK and Trans PRK Surgery:

  • With LASIK, a second laser is used to create a flap in the surface of the cornea which creates a 'window' into the cornea. This flap is moved to one side and expertly put back into place once the vision correction has been done.

  • Trans PRK Surgery on the other hand doesn’t create a flap at all, and instead relies on only the laser machine to remove the first layer (epithelium) to create this 'window'. Once this is done, an expert will operate the laser to apply the vision correction and a contact bandage lens is applied after the procedure to assist with epithelial regrowth.

Choosing the Best Option:

Determining the most suitable option between LASIK and Trans PRK Surgery depends on various factors, including the thickness of your cornea, the severity of your refractive errors, and your individual preferences.

At The Harley Street Eye Centre, we have experienced PRK doctors who specialise in vision correction procedures. We understand the importance of personalised care and will guide you in choosing the best option based on your unique circumstances. Commonly Asked Questions About Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery

What is Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery?

Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery is a refractive procedure that corrects vision by reshaping the cornea using an advanced laser system. It is a non-invasive technique that does not involve creating a corneal flap, providing enhanced safety and minimizing certain risks associated with traditional flap-based procedures.

How does Trans EPI-PRK differ from other laser eye surgery procedures?

Trans EPI-PRK differs from other procedures, such as LASIK or PRK, in that it does not require the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the surgeon removes the epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea, to access the underlying corneal tissue for laser treatment. This makes Trans EPI-PRK a suitable option for patients with thin corneas or those who are not eligible for flap-based procedures.

What vision conditions can be treated with Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery?

Trans EPI-PRK can effectively treat various refractive errors, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. It can also be an option for patients with presbyopia, although additional treatments or procedures may be necessary to address the age-related changes in near vision.

Is Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery painful?

The procedure itself is typically painless, as numbing eye drops are used to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. However, it is normal to experience some discomfort or sensitivity in the days following the procedure as the epithelium regrows and the cornea heals. Your surgeon will provide you with appropriate pain management options and instructions to help alleviate any discomfort.

What is the recovery process like after Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery?

The recovery process varies for each individual but generally involves several days of initial healing and a gradual improvement in vision over time. You may experience some blurry vision, light sensitivity, and mild discomfort during the first few days. It is crucial to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions, including the use of prescribed eye drops and avoiding activities that could impact the healing process, such as swimming or rubbing your eyes.

How long does it take to achieve optimal vision after Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery?

The timeline for achieving optimal vision can vary among patients. While some individuals may notice significant improvements within the first week, it can take several weeks or even months for your vision to stabilize and reach its full potential. Your surgeon will monitor your progress during follow-up visits and provide guidance on what to expect during your recovery journey.

Am I a suitable candidate for Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery?

Determining your candidacy for Trans EPI-PRK Non Touch Laser Eye Surgery requires a comprehensive evaluation by an experienced eye surgeon. Factors such as your overall eye health, corneal thickness, prescription stability, and specific vision requirements will be taken into consideration.
