WELCOME TO THE HARLEY STREET EYE CENTRE
AT 22A
WHAT IS DRY EYE & WHAT ARE DRY EYE SYMPTOMS?
Dry eye is a broad term describing a range of eye symptoms which include, redness, scratchiness, blurred vision, discomfort with contact lenses, crusty eyes in the morning, dry and watery eyes, these are collectively known as dry eye syndrome.
WHAT CAUSES DRY EYES?
While much research has been done and much more is still ongoing, a consensus shows a relationship between Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and Dry Eye Syndrome.
Meibomian glands are the lipid and mucin secreting part of the eye lid, these glands can be blocked or under-function leading to a drop in the amount of lipid and mucin in the tear altering the water lipid mucin ratio which is crucial to stop the water in the tear from evaporating and creating the symptoms of dry eye.
WHAT ARE THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS?
While contributing factors are numerous and varied, stand out contributing factors are:
-
eye strain from above recommended screen use
-
excessive airplane travel
-
lack of humidifiers at home
-
general lack of eye lid health
-
on occasion LASIK eye surgery can contribute towards dry eyes with some reported cases of eye dryness after having Lasik

HOW IS DRY EYE TREATED?
Dry eye treatment at home traditionally and historically usually involves regular application of heat pads and over the counter eye drops.
While these seem much simpler and more natural remedies for dry eyes treatment, it places the burden of compliance with this daily treatment back on the patient with widely varying results with varying degrees of effectiveness.
Depending on the diagnostics that we perform at The Harley Street Eye Centre, there are different treatments we can apply for dry eye symptoms.
By understanding the water-lipid-mucin ratio of your tears we can direct you to the best treatment for dry eyes, from punctal plug insertion to treat over watery eyes, to the application of Intensive Pulse Light (IPL) to address the MGD causing your symptoms and severe dry eye.
WHAT IS IPL AND
HOW DOES IT WORK?
IPL or otherwise known as laser treatment for dry eyes, isn’t actually a laser, it’s a concentrated light source so the heat output is significantly less and much more comfortable.
The IPL for dry eyes that is used at The Harley Street Eye Centre works in 2 ways:
(1) first, it applies heat to unblock blocked glands.
(2) secondly, the specific light used serves to stimulate the non-functioning or under-functioning glands to kick start again.
AFTER YOUR IPL FOR DRY EYES TREATMENT
Three applications are given over 3 months and symptom relief will gradually subside.
Effects of IPL treatment last for between 18 months and 2 years. A 4th top up is given after month 3 if needed depending on severity.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE WITH IPL FOR DRY EYE TREATMENT?
THE HARLEY STREET EYE CENTRE
DRY EYE PACKAGE
We offer this dry eye treatment as a package:
-
2 consultations (1 before we start and another consultation after 6 months so we can track progress.
-
3 IPL applications (package includes 3 and the 4th is free of charge if needed)
-
before and after testing to take a baseline at the start and a measurable quantifiable method to track patient objective patient improvement.
The effectiveness of the treatment is dependent of a specific protocol used:
The doctor looking after you will begin your IPL treatment for dry eye relief by placing shields over the eyes to protect them from the light pulses.
Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area and will deliver the pulses of light to the area underneath the lower lashes, this usually take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Chalazion: a common occurrence when the glands in your eyelids are blocked and the gradual accumulation of secretions forms behind the blockage to cause redness and swelling in your eyelid along with a visible lump. Chalazions can arise due to suboptimal eyelid hygiene or inflammation of the eyelid (blepharitis) among other causes.
Chalazions are typically surgically removed via an incision on the inside of the lid, after numbing the lid with local anaesthetic. You will be given an antibiotic to apply after the procedure for the next few days.
