Got a Question?

Ask Mr Ghabra & His Team Of Doctors

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition of the cornea that leads to weakening and corneal thinning resulting in a change in shape.

This in turn, can lead to distortion of the light entering your eye and thus your vision is affected. The change in shape that occurs in the cornea includes coning, bulging and irregularity, resulting in a thin cornea.

Keratoconus Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms and signs usually start in adolescence or when children are younger, and this means multiple trips to the opticians because glasses are no longer fit for purpose.

When this happens, this should be an indicator to start thinking about keratoconus. Keratoconus Patients may also complain of seeing multiple images, a symptom and phenomenon known as karatoconus ghosting.

Keratoconus can present in both eyes or in one eye at first and the second eye later. While it is considered as a rare disease, with the advent of better awareness and advanced improved imaging of the cornea, keratoconus is not as uncommon as previously thought and incidence in London and world-wide is rising.

Keratoconus Diagnosis

Diagnosis primarily comes from a consultation with our keratoconus specialists in addition to comparative chronological scans to see the malformation of the cornea over time, and to determine the stages of keratoconus.

In certain populations, where suspicion is high (such as a family member with the condition) we can detect sub-clinical keratoconus.

Keratoconus Eye Treatment Options

In order to understand keratoconus treatment, we must think of this type of corneatreatment as 2 distinct processes. Both processes are available at The Harley Street Eye Centre.

The first is to stop progression of the disease through corneal collagen cross linking.

Secondly, reshaping the cornea is paramount to improving your vision.

The treatments we have available are:

  1. Custom contact lenses

  2. Corneal Cross Linking

  3. Intra-corneal reshaping implants: Corneal ring implant, intacs surgery

  4. Topography guided laser surface ablation

  5. Combined therapy: Corneal Collagen Cross Linking + laser surface ablation or corneal rings

From new onset Keratoconus to advanced keratoconus our team of keratoconus specialists are able to make this process less daunting through our established & comprehensive keratoconus clinic.

Corneal Abrasion Cornea Scratch

Corneal scratches or cornea scrapes can occur anywhere, anytime. Scratching your cornea can occur when placing a contact lens, or your newborn reaching for your face and scratching your eye.

When this happens the first thing to do is not to panic despite the pain you may feel. Try to keep the affected eye closed as blinking can be painful.

What will you be feeling and experiencing?

  • Pain when blinking

  • Light sensitivity

  • Watery blood shot eyes

  • Blurry Vision

What Can The Harley Street Eye Centre Do For Your Corneal Scratch?

Corneal Abrasion Treatment: A clinical corneal consultation will be needed, where we will apply an eye drop to stain the eye and confirm the scratch. Scratches in the cornea tend to be in the epithelial layer (top layer of the cornea) and thus future regrowth is expected however this will take a little time.

We can assist regrowth by placing a clear bandage contact lens on to protect the cornea for a few days while regrowth occurs.

You will also be given a topical eye antibiotic to prevent infection from bacteria that may have been introduced.

Cornea Transplantation - Keratoplasty

Corneal Transplant is medically known as a Keratoplasty. It is a surgical procedure where unhealthy cornea is replaced with a clear new cornea from a cornea donor.

The corneal transplants our corneal transplant surgeons perform at The Harley Street Eye Centre are:

  1. Full thickness Corneal Transplant: Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK)

  2. Partial Thickness Corneal Transplant: Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK)

  3. Endothelial Keratoplasty: Decement’s Stripping Endotheial Keratoplasty (DSEK)

For more information, please submit a contact enquiry or get in touch via telephone to speak with one of our cornea doctors.

Pterygium Eye Treatments & Surgery

The white of the eye is called the sclera, and its not uncommon for a slow growth to appear which is pink and fleshy in nature. Usually, pterygium is confined to the sclera however it can encroach on the cornea and cause visual disturbance in addition to potential scarring of the cornea.

The pterygium symptoms you may experience will range from sensation of irritation, grittiness and inflammation along with potential symptoms of dryness to visual disturbance and blurry vision if the pterygium is found to encroach on the cornea.

Depending on the extent of growth, treatment may start with symptomatic relief if vision is not affected with regular monitoring. Surgical removal is an option if symptom relief becomes ineffective or if the cornea is at risk.

If you do suspect you have a pterygium do feel free to get in touch with The Harley Street Eye Centre to speak with a pterygium specialist.

Common Questions About Corneal & Keratoconus Treatments

What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition characterized by the thinning and bulging of the cornea, resulting in a cone-shaped deformity. It can cause distorted vision, increased sensitivity to light, and difficulty wearing contact lenses.

How is keratoconus diagnosed?

Keratoconus is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. The diagnostic process typically includes a detailed patient history, visual acuity tests, corneal topography, and a slit-lamp examination. In some cases, additional tests such as corneal pachymetry or corneal tomography may be performed.

What are the treatment options for keratoconus?

The treatment of keratoconus depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's individual needs. Mild to moderate cases can often be managed with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. In more advanced stages, other options may include corneal cross-linking, intracorneal ring segments (intacs), or in severe cases, corneal transplantation.

What is corneal cross-linking?

Corneal cross-linking is a minimally invasive procedure that aims to strengthen the cornea and halt the progression of keratoconus. It involves applying riboflavin eye drops to the cornea, followed by exposure to ultraviolet light. This process creates new cross-links within the corneal tissue, increasing its stability.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with corneal cross-linking?

Corneal cross-linking is generally safe, but as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. These can include temporary discomfort, light sensitivity, dry eyes, and temporary haziness of vision. Your eye care professional will discuss these risks with you in detail before the procedure.

Can keratoconus be treated with laser eye surgery (LASIK or PRK)?

In most cases, laser eye surgery is not recommended for individuals with keratoconus. The corneal irregularities associated with this condition can make the outcomes unpredictable and potentially worsen the vision. However, in some instances, after stabilizing the keratoconus, a subsequent laser procedure may be performed to correct any residual refractive error.

How long does the recovery process take after corneal cross-linking or other surgical interventions?

The recovery period varies depending on the specific procedure and the individual patient. After corneal cross-linking, patients may experience temporary discomfort and light sensitivity for a few days to a week. Visual recovery may take several weeks or months. Following other surgical interventions, such as corneal transplantation, the recovery period can range from several weeks to several months.

Are there alternative treatments or experimental therapies available for keratoconus?

Research into alternative treatments and therapies for keratoconus is ongoing, but as of now, there are no widely accepted alternative treatments that have demonstrated consistent efficacy. It is important to consult with a qualified eye care professional who can provide guidance based on the latest scientific evidence.

How effective are the treatment options for keratoconus?

The effectiveness of treatment options for keratoconus varies depending on the severity of the condition , the chosen treatment modality, and individual patient factors. Early intervention and stabilization of keratoconus can often prevent or slow down disease progression, improving the overall visual outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Please note that these FAQs are for informational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice. It is essential to consult with a qualified eye care professional to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations for your specific condition.
