Do you have any of these concerns?

  • My optician has diagnosed my cataract and I'm still waiting to hear back

  • My reading vision has deteriorated

  • My vision is not as bright as before, especially at night

  • My vision is cloudy

  • I'd like to look at my treatment options so that I don't have to wear glasses anymore

  • I cannot wait for 6 to 12 months for an NHS operation

  • I'd like to speak with a doctor about my treatment options

Mr Marwan Ghabra

Clinical Director

It is important to note that these signs are not definitive indicators of cataracts or the need for surgery. After a thorough eye examination and the appropriate diagnostic tests, a qualified eye care professional at The Harley Street Eye Centre can determine a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, if required.

What causes cataracts to form... and why will it not get better on its own?

A cataract is a clouding and hardening of your natural lens. As a cataract progresses, you will notice your reading vision getting worse, vision will appear more cloudy, and you may have increasing difficulty seeing in the dark. Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness in the world, your cataract will continue to progress until it is addressed by an eye doctor.

At the Harley Street Eye Centre, we have helped hundreds of patients treat their cataracts and live independent lives free of reading glasses.

Got a Question?

Ask Mr Ghabra & His Team Of Doctors

What are the benefits of having your cataract procedure done privately instead of the NHS?

  1. No Waiting Time: One of the first benefits you will notice is just how quickly you can have your cataract treated. Our procedures can be completed as soon as 1 week from your consultation, as opposed to the 6 to 12 month waiting time for the NHS.

  1. Glasses Free Vision: NHS-based cataract surgery will offer you a basic implantable lens that will give you clear vision for distance, but you will still need your glasses for reading and watching the TV. Private Cataract Surgery offers a wider selection of implantable lenses that will enable you to read, play sports, watch the tv, and drive without glasses.

  1. Access To Your Doctor: Are you having trouble getting a hold of your doctor even before you started the process of getting your cataract done? Are you worried that you won't be able to talk to someone when you need support after your procedure? Private cataract treatment at The Harley Street Eye Centre gives you access to our doctor manned patient liaison line to speak directly with your medical team any time you need

What happens if I'm not quite happy with the outcome?

At The Harley Street Eye Centre, all our cataract treatments come with a 1-year guarantee. If your outcome was not close to achieving your expectation for your vision, we offer free laser surgery vision "fine-tuning" to give your vision that little boost.

Why not a lifetime guarantee you ask? Simply put, we feel that lifetime guarantees are misleading sales tactics, for 1 simple reason, a lot can happen to our eyes and 9 times out of 10 the deterioration in your vision after 1 year from your procedure, is most likely due to another eye condition and not related to your operation.

So we are honest with you up front, after 1 year whatever happens with your eye is unlikely due to your operation, however, we will investigate irrespectively and find a solution that fits you.

Does The Procedure Hurt?

During the procedure, you won't feel any pain. You may experience some discomfort or soreness in the eye in the few days after the procedure. This is pain that can be treated by most over-the-counter pain medication.

Discomfort after cataract surgery varies. Many patients describe a mild foreign body sensation or feeling of sand or grit in the eyes immediately after surgery.

What to do: The anti-inflammatory drops will help with this, along with the lubricating eye drops. However, do not apply the drops together, as you may wash out the medication if you apply the lubricating eye drops too soon after the anti-inflammatory drops. Wait 5 minutes between applications.

Try to avoid eye rubbing and applying pressure on the eye after surgery.

What to do: If your eyes feel itchy, apply the lubricating eye drops and maintain applying your other eye drops according to the schedule. Rubbing your eyes may affect the flap if you had LASIK surgery or impede healing if you had Trans PRK. for either procedure, eye rubbing will delay the healing and reaching your visual outcomes.

Commonly Asked Questions About Cataract Surgery & Treatments

What is a cataract?

A cataract refers to the clouding of the natural lens inside the eye, leading to blurry or hazy vision. It commonly occurs with age but can also result from factors such as injury, certain medications, or underlying medical conditions.

How is a cataract diagnosed?

A comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary for an accurate diagnosis. The examination may involve visual acuity tests, dilated eye examination, and various diagnostic tests, such as tonometry to measure eye pressure and biometry to assess the size and shape of the eye.

Can cataracts be treated without surgery?

In the early stages, changes in eyeglass prescriptions or modifications in lighting conditions may temporarily improve vision. However, cataracts progressively worsen, and surgery is the only effective treatment option to restore clear vision.

What does cataract surgery involve?

Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, and it usually takes about 15-30 minutes to complete.

Is cataract surgery safe?

Cataract surgery is considered one of the safest and most commonly performed surgeries worldwide. It has a high success rate, with minimal complications. However, as with any surgical procedure, risks and potential complications exist, which will be thoroughly discussed by your ophthalmologist.

How long does it take to recover from cataract surgery?

The recovery time after cataract surgery is relatively short. Most patients experience improved vision within a few days, with complete recovery typically occurring within four to six weeks. Your ophthalmologist will provide specific post-operative care instructions to promote healing and optimal visual outcomes.

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

The choice of intraocular lens (IOL) can influence your need for glasses after cataract surgery. There are different types of IOLs available, including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses. Monofocal lenses typically provide clear vision at a fixed distance, while multifocal or toric lenses may reduce dependence on glasses for various distances. Your ophthalmologist will help you choose the most suitable IOL based on your visual needs and lifestyle.

Is cataract surgery covered by insurance?

Cataract surgery is generally covered by medical insurance plans. However, coverage details may vary, and it is advisable to consult with your insurance provider to understand the extent of coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses.

Are there any restrictions or precautions after cataract surgery?

After cataract surgery, it is important to avoid strenuous activities, swimming, or rubbing the eyes for a few weeks. Your ophthalmologist will provide detailed post-operative instructions tailored to your specific case to ensure a smooth recovery and minimise any potential complications.

What are the potential risks or complications of cataract surgery?

While cataract surgery is generally safe, there are potential risks and complications, albeit rare. These can include infection, bleeding, swelling, retinal detachment, increased intraocular pressure, or dissatisfaction with visual outcomes. Your ophthalmologist will discuss these risks with you and address any concerns you may have.

Please note that these FAQs are for informational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice. It is essential to consult with a qualified eye care professional to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations for your specific condition.
